Well.... electronic instruments you can just plug into your line-in or mic jack. If you wanna get serious you'll have to buy an audio interface. You can get a cheap M-Audio one (FastTrack USB) that you can plug a guitar and a mic into for less than $200, but it has issues... all M-Audio products have issues... I hate M-Audio. Don't buy it unless you're really poor and have no other choice. Even the more expensive M-Audio shit sucks.
Acoustic instruments you'll have to mic, and that's a whole other world...
